Dietland author Sarai Walker June 28 (WU-158)

From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-158-dietland-author-sarai-walker-june-28/

For a lively discussion about some deep issues, join BCB host Lyssa Danehy deHart as she interviews Sarai Walker about her debut novel, Dietland.

Dietland is a bold, original, and funny debut novel that takes on the beauty industry, gender inequality, and our weight loss obsession -- from the inside out, and with fists flying. Sarai will be speaking at Eagle Harbor Books on Sunday, June 28 from 3-5 pm.

In this book, which is part Fight Club, part Feminist Manifesto, the diet revolution is here -- and it's armed. Heroine Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you're fat, to be noticed is to be judged. Or mocked. Or worse.

Plum is biding her time (with a job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls' magazine) until her weight-loss surgery, believing that only then can her true life as a thin person finally begin.

But when a mysterious woman starts following her, Plum finds herself falling down a rabbit hole and into an underground community of women who live life on their own terms. There Plum agrees to a series of challenges that force her to deal with her past, her doubts, and the real costs of becoming "beautiful."

At the same time, a dangerous guerrilla group called "Jennifer" begins to terrorize a world that mistreats women. As Plum grapples with her personal struggles, she becomes entangled in a sinister plot, and the consequences are explosive.

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to meet and learn more about an immensely talented writer!

Community Center hosts Ometepe Nicaragua photos (WU-156)

The Bainbridge Photography Club July 4th Exhibit will show 30 photos taken by 15 deaf children on Ometepe - the Bainbridge sister island in Nicaragua. In this podcast, Sue Barrington and Dale Spoor explain the background of the show.

This is one of many projects initiated by Dale Spoor after learning that there were no government programs on Nicaragua for hearing-impaired children.

Dale participated in the first delegation of the Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Islands Association (BOSIA) to Ometepe in 1988. Since then he has led a dozen trips and delegations over the years. Dale and his wife also facilitate Spanish classes at the Senior Center.

In January of this year a group of 12 BOSIA delegates carried to the island 15 new simple digital cameras donated by members of the BI Photo Club. They met with the children one morning. With the assistance of a local sign language interpreter, they taught them how to use the cameras. They gave them simple instructions for taking photos: tell us your story, show us your friends, your family, your island and your lives. The children spent a week in their local communities taking photos.

Members of the photo club have created an exhibition of 30 photos that will be shown in a number of venues here and in Nicaragua. The first exhibition will be at the Waterfront Park Community Center during the Fourth of July celebration as a part of the annual photography show there.

Brenda Berry, a BI professional photographer who was a member of the delegation created a 6-minute video that captures the essence of the experience of working with the deaf children on Ometepe in the photography project.

Planetarium show and telescope party June 13 (WU-155)

Bainbridge Island is home to a planetarium and the largest publicly accessible telescope in the Northwest. The Battle Point Astronomical Association (BPAA) holds regular planetarium shows and telescope viewings that are open to the public at the Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory at Battle Point Park.

In this podcast, Dr. Erica Saint Clair tells BCB host Sonia Scaer about the upcoming Planetarium Show on Saturday evening June 13th at 8:30 pm. This family event about visiting the planets and exploring with planetary rovers is sure to inspire wonder and mystery. Erica’s topic that evening will be “Exploring our Solar System”.

If the sky is clear, visitors will be invited after the presentation to view the stars and planets of the night sky through the telescopes of BPAA astronomers.

Erica explains: “From our first interplanetary landing on Venus to roving around Mars our venture to explore the solar system around us has been fraught with obstacles, heartache and unthinkable triumph. For the past 6 decades we have been exploring our solar system with landers, rovers, and probes. Spend the evening learning about the history and future of humankind's interaction with our other planets and top it off with viewing Venus, the first planet to have a probe successfully landed upon it, through our observatory telescopes.”

Battle Point Astronomical Association welcomes individual and family memberships. Gain access to classes, talks and even the ability to check out telescopes allowing you to view the night sky all month long from the comfort of your own backyard.

The evening is free to BPAA members. A $2 donation is suggested for nonmembers, and $5 for families. For more information about the Association, see http://bpastro.org

Help create a Bainbridge Island brand on June 9 and 11 (WU-152)

The City, the Bainbridge Island Chamber, the Downtown Association and other community partners are inviting Bainbridge residents and business owners to help create a toolkit to tell the Bainbridge Island story far and wide.

In this podcast, Kellie Stickney of the City and Rex Oliver, President and CEO of the Chamber, explain the upcoming 3-day creative process.

Consultants Arnett Muldrow Associates will help community members develop a Bainbridge brand that can be used for the purpose of economic development, inviting visitors, and enhancing community cohesion. They earned kudos for similar projects in WA communities like Gig Harbor, Ellensburg, Wenatchee and Port Orchard.

You can get involved by taking a brief online survey and then attend public input meeting on Tuesday, June 9 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, and the outcomes "reveal" on Thursday from 6:30 to 8pm. Each is at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA).

After some additional weeks for refinement, Arnett and Muldrow will provide, for example:

  • A logo and tagline for the City and initiative partners
  • Logo designs for events and organizations
  • Custom banner designs
  • Coordinated wayfinding sign designs
  • Cover designs  for visitor guides, etc.
  • Web page skin concepts
  • Ad templates and concepts
  • Photography
  • Style guide

According to the City's Community Engagement Specialist Kellie Stickney, "This process is about bringing the community together to speak in one voice in a way that will create increased collaboration and enhanced economic opportunities for local businesses." Kellie mentions that it's a timely project to help commemorate the 25th anniversary of the local vote to create an island-wide city.

For more information on the community identity process contact Kellie Stickney, Community Engagement Specialist by email.
