Whatever happened to Happily Ever After? Lesser Known Players is tackling that question with Next to Normal, a rock musical which will open Friday, January 24th at Rolling Bay Hall

Written by Washingtonians Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt and first shown at the Village Theater in Issaquah, Next to Normal centers on a bipolar mother and the effects of her illness on her husband and children.  Over the course of 2 hours (and over 35 musical numbers), the six cast members explore the daunting challenges of contemporary family life with a Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning blend of humor and painful honesty.  The script sparkles and the music delights, keeping a tough subject both palatable and entertaining.

In this podcast director Steven Fogell, production manager Dawn Janow, and cast members Sarah Taylor and Henry Beddoe share their experiences and discoveries in presenting this unusual and riveting performance.

Presented by Lesser Known Players, Next to Normal opens Friday, January 24th, 7:30 pm at Rolling Bay Hall and runs for three weekends: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 with matinee performances at 3 pm on Sunday January 26th, Sunday, February 2nd and 9th with an understudy matinee performance on Saturday, February 1st.

In this podcast Erik Peterson reflects on his approaches to painting and the influences that have shaped his complex and evocative style.

The paintings for the library show are a result of 14 years of loosely focused, highly devoted, daily painting practice and 11 years of formal studio art education provided by Bainbridge public schools, the University of Washington, and American University. Erik also credits his two loving parents who did their best with a sensitive and quietly rebellious kid.

Erik’s exhibit will open during the First Friday Arts Walk at the Bainbridge Public Library on December 6 from 5-7 pm, and will be on display for the month of December.

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Matilda The Musical opens December 6 at BPA. It’s an inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life; a captivating masterpiece that revels in the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination.

It stars BPA newcomer Olivia Juarez as Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis. Listen here as Olivia shares her thoughts on Matilda with musical director Josh Anderson and BCB’s own Justin Lynn, who plays the heinous teacher, Agnes Trunchbull.

For delicious pranks, period costumes, an innovative set, and music that ranges from jazz to hard rock, don’t miss Matilda! How do wild salmon, hatchery salmon and farmed fish interact with Orca whales and our desire to have a stable environment?  The Patagonia-sponsored documentary, Artifishal, explores these questions and more: come see it at the Lynwood theatre November 7 and meet the film’s producer, Bainbridge Islander Dylan Tomine.

Tomine is a fisherman, forager, writer, conservationist and father, not necessarily in that order. His book, Closer to the Ground (Patagonia Books, 2012), is an account of a year in his family’s life as they forage, process, cook and eat wild foods from the land and waters around their Bainbridge Island home.

In this podcast Dylan talks with BCB’s Chris Walker about the making of Artifishal, which he produced in hopes that there will be fish for his kids, Skyla and Weston, when they grow up. Listen here as he describes some of the work being done to protect wild salmon – a subject of growing interest in light of recent fish pen failures and our local Orca population decline.

The film will be presented at 7pm Thursday November 7 at the Historic Lynwood Theatre.  A discussion will follow with Tomine and Kurt Beardslee, the Director of the Wild Fish Conservancy. For free tickets, visit https://artifishal-lynwood.brownpapertickets.com/

They offer workshops once a year and are featuring much Guild work in a show at the Bainbridge Library in November. The pieces in the show are from the Guild’s annual challenge, a list of parameters that guide the project. This year it’s quadrilaterals. All the while they continue with their Monthly Business Meetings & Sew-Ins on the second Sunday of each month (except May which is the third Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm).

What happens when a tour guide with a vibrant imagination has to show off an incredibly boring mansion? The Lesser Known Players will bring Peter Shaffer’s comic masterpiece, Lettice and Lovage, to life on the Rolling Bay stage starting October 11th.

The show follows the adventures of Lettice, an eccentric tour guide at England's least interesting historical manor, who enlarges, enlivens, and enlightens her tours with fantastic and hilariously false tales of the manor's past. But when her straight-laced bureaucratic boss Lotte finds out, the fun - and Lettice's employment - are over. So begins the unlikeliest of friendships in this madcap comedy about truth, fiction, architecture, and the surprising utility of alternative facts.

Listen here as Director Karen Hauser and stars Michelle Peterson (Lotte) and Jennifer Hodges (Lettice) explain how the show came to the Lesser Known Players and what it’s like following in the footsteps of Dame Maggie Smith, who won a Tony for her performance as Lettice.

Don’t miss this delightfully British comedy! Lettice and Lovage, brought to you by the Lesser Known Players, will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday October 11, 12, & 13, and again the following weekend, October 18, 19, & 20. Describing her art as traditional Russian Impressionism with a twist of the sublime, Fatima Young has studied the masters since she was a child and has recently returned to painting after a 25 year hiatus.

After her husband passed, Fatima found therapy in hiking and she used painting to help her heal. The beautiful surroundings of the Pacific Northwest blended perfectly with Fatima’s passion for Plein Air painting. Now she studies nature at its purest and simplest.

Using a palette knife and bold colors to create contrast between light and shadow, Fatima changes the complex forms of nature into simple shapes and strokes, allowing the viewer to imagine the rest. She enjoys letting her “subconscious play around on the canvas capturing the essence of her inner feelings.” For her, it’s all about the journey.

Fatima’s show, Capturing the Moment: A Plein Air Passion, opens at 5 p.m. in the community meeting room at the Bainbridge Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library as part of the community’s First Fridays Art Walk on Friday, October 4th. Fatima’s paintings will be displayed through the end of October.

Her work is currently on display at Bloedel through September, and can also be found on her website: www.FatimaYoungArt.com.

The future of play on the island has never looked brighter. There is an effort, in partnership with the Bainbridge Island Parks & Recreation District and the Parks Foundation, to replace the damaged Kid’s Up Playground at Battle Point Park.

If you’ve ever visited Battle Point with your kids or if you yourself remember playing on this playground as a child, you know it is one of the largest and most loved playgrounds on the island. But it has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced for safety, and this gives us the opportunity to make some exciting improvements. Perhaps best of all, the future playground will be far more inclusive for all ages and abilities. No longer will a child or caregiver have to miss out on the fun.

Listen here as Curt Thomas and Stephanie Page describe the ongoing effort, why this work needs to take place, and the incredibly cool new features coming soon. Plus, listen for news regarding an upcoming community event where we can all pitch in to help build the future of play on the island.

How do you capture a storm on canvas? Artist Joanie Klorer grew up in Tornado Alley, and after a career helping others find therapeutic resolution through art she's carried her own awareness of time, place, and storms into abstract paintings she'll share at the Bainbridge Island Library for the month of July.

During her nearly four decades as a social worker, Joanie found art was a great way to help people -- especially non-verbal clients -- express their hearts and experiences. Today she uses her art to achieve the same objective for herself, drawing on her experience of those childhood storms to feed her paintings

“I think of memory as a shadow which lingers from encounters and places.  Memory, influenced by time, place, and experience forms the catalyst for my paintings.  I believe my paintings are often an attempt at resolution of memories that are stuck like films on continuous replay.”

Joanie's exhibit, entitled "Where I Come From: Memory and Place," will open during the First Friday Arts Walk at the Bainbridge Public Library on July 5th from 5-7 pm. Don't miss it!

Poetry fans will gain new insight into Emily Dickinson from the William Luce play, Belle of Amherst, being presented by Island Theatre at the Library on Saturday and Sunday June 15 and 16 at 7:30.

Composed almost entirely in her own words from letters painstakingly researched by the playwright, this whimsical one-woman show offers not only readings of Dickinson's poems but a compelling picture of the poet, her wry wit, the possible reasons behind some of her life choices, and what life was like for an intelligent and creative woman in mid-1800's New England.

Listen here as Jennifer Hodges, who plays Dickinson in this reading, and Steve Stolee, director of the show, share some of what they've discovered about the contemporary implications of this elusive character in the process of putting together this production.

.. and be sure to come see why Emily Dickinson's legacy -- her poetry, her courage, and the fascinating life of seclusion she chose -- still has relevance today. That's Belle of Amherst, Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16, 7:30 at the Bainbridge Public Library. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome. In an attempt to curb climate change, increasing numbers of young people are being helped by Our Children’s Trust to sue the federal and some state governments, asserting that government’s failure to take action has violated their constitutional right to life, liberty and property. Learn more about Our Children’s Trust when the Climate and Energy Forum meets June 1 at the Eagle Harbor Congregation Church.

Young people across the globe know their generation (known as Generation Z) is tasked with implementing solutions to combat climate change. Their environmental advocacy takes many forms, but recently, increasing numbers of young people are turning to the Constitution for support of their efforts.

Our Children’s Trust advocates for the constitutional right to a stable climate and seeks court ordered climate recovery plans.

Come learn more from Our Children’s Trust senior staff attorney, Andrea Rogers, along with a local plaintiff, and Charlotte Larson-Freeman, a Bainbridge Island High School student and activist. Presenters will describe the federal suit filed in 2015, Juliana v U.S., which asserts that government actions have not only violated the youngest generation’s constitutional rights but also failed to protect public trust resources.

“Mischief & Craft” is the title of Gigi Godfrey’s art show opening Friday, June 7th in the Bainbridge Island Library. The title comes from a chapter in the book Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith (no relation).

Why did Gigi take the title of her art show from a book about octopuses? She met Eleanora, an octopus, at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and chose her as a subject.

Gigi, formally trained as a cardiac nurse, is drawn to subjects displaying some sort of rhythm—whether in the way the light patterns form, the shapes link together, or the weaving of color harmony. She’s happiest staying loose with the brush and leaving unfinished work to show through—creating a trail of the evolution.  Color and texture are the real appeal for Gigi. “When searching for the right color value and temperature, I tend to leave all the marks on the final work, showing the decision process, which I call ‘painting out loud’”.

You’ll see Eleanora and more of Gigi’s work at the upcoming Library Art Show on Bainbridge Island.  Opening reception is Friday June 7th from 5-7 pm.

Did you know Seattle Grunge Rock Bands had their roots on Bainbridge Island? Learn more about the BI teen music scene at the Historical Museum's Fearless Music exhibit, opening May 27th!

Fearless Music, an upcoming exhibit at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum (BIHM), celebrates the independent teen music scene on Bainbridge from 1980 to 2018.

While many people are familiar with Seattle's grunge scene, they may not know that many other accomplished bands emerged from the island.  During the nearly four decades covered by this exhibit, the Island served as a breeding ground for creative, curious, and resourceful youth whose music has influenced regional and national sounds. Their bands covered genres ranging from punk to rock to heavy metal and more, but all shared the theme of a dedicated do-it-yourself approach.

Listen here as BIHM Executive Director Brianna Kosowitz and Guest Curator Merilee Mostov talk about these hard working teens who composed and produced their own music, booked and managed their own concerts on and off island, and designed their own graphics and fanzines.  They also describe some of the interesting artifacts on display and give details about this truly interactive exhibit.

Fearless Music opens May 27th and runs through Labor Day.  For more information, visit the Historical Museum website, https://bainbridgehistory.org/

Mainly self-taught, Joan’s influenced by the great Dutch Masters, Rembrandt & Vermeer to name a few. She loves Leonardo da Vinci and likes to paint from photos -- often images she finds in National Geographic Magazine.

But it was a photo of her granddaughter that got her back in the studio. At first it was hard, she didn’t think she was going to be able to do it. However, with perseverance, something she encourages other artists to do in tough spots, she realized she still had the skills, and she’s never looked back.

Joan’s show opens at the library as part of the community’s First Fridays Art Walk on Friday, May 3rd from 5:30-7 pm, and will be on display at the library for the month of May.

Curious about the artist behind the new murals in the ferry terminal? Meet Cynthia Lait when her new exhibit opens at the Bainbridge Island Library on Friday Evening, April 5th.

Ever since Cynthia Lait can remember, she’s been creating art. From drawing horses as a child, to rising early as a young mother to get some studio time before getting her kids off to school and herself to work to her current situation of having her studio set up the way she likes it, Cynthia likes to be creative.

She took the occasional art class in high school, but when it came time for college she chose to become a chemical engineer, a degree that informs her creativity process more than one would think. With her children now grown she now has time for a more serious studio practice.

She’s inspired by nature; memories of a walk in the woods, playing at the beach. She’s inspired by movement; the changes in color and shape as an object moves. And she’s inspired by patterns; the evident and not-so-evident, the beginnings, middles and endings.

For her collage work she paints Japanese papers with vibrant colors then cuts, arranges and re-arranges these pieces of paper until it resonates. She likes the definition of the clean edges so that the work takes on more graphical style.

Come meet Cynthia at the Bainbridge Library when her show opens Friday, April 5, from 5:30 to 7 pm. For more of her work, visit http://www.cynthialait.com.

What do a playwright, a freedom fighter, an assassin, and a queen have in common? Find out when you come to The Revolutionists, a delightful feminist comedy set in the French Revolution, opening at BPA March 8.

Set in the 1790s during the French Reign of Terror, The Revolutionists imagines a fictional conversation about power between four real life women who either had their power taken, or never had any in the first place.

The Revolutionists, written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by Kate Carruthers, is playing at Bainbridge Performing Arts March 8th through the 24th, with a pay-what-you-can preview on the 7th.
