What's Up Bainbridge

Deb Wuensch, president of the Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild, discusses the mission of the Guild, the current yearly challenge and the stirring and informative resulting show coming to the Bainbridge Library in November. She defines some of the modern quilting techniques and explains many different opportunities the Guild offers in supporting this creative element in the community.

The Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild does a lot in our community, having just finished the annual Bainbridge Island Quilt Festival in September and continuing to support the nationally recognized American Hero Quilts project. They offer workshops once a year and are featuring much Guild work in a show at the Bainbridge Library in November. The pieces in the show are from the Guild’s annual challenge, a list of parameters that guide the project. This year it’s quadrilaterals. All the while they continue with their Monthly Business Meetings & Sew-Ins on the second Sunday of each month (except May which is the third Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm).

The Guild’s show opens as part of the island’s First Fridays Art Walk on Friday, Nov 1st @ 5 p.m. in the community meeting room at the Bainbridge Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library.

Mario Alejandro Torres is in his second year as the Music Director and Conductor for the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and he’s excited for the symphony’s season to begin!

This season opens on Saturday, Nov 9th at 7:30 p.m. with Distant Light.

What excites Mario isn’t just the music, although in this podcast you will hear him talk passionately about the pieces chosen for the first concert of the season. What’s exciting to Mario is the opportunity to share great music with our community, as well as the opportunity to work with amazing musical performers, including our very own, very talented Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra.

The program begins with Jubilee from American composer George Chadwick. Distant Light, a violin concerto composed by Pēteris Vasks, follows as the second piece for the evening. Distant Light features a special guest, violinist and former concertmaster of the Seattle Symphony, Maria Larionoff. Distant Light premiered in 1997 and combines the typical elements of classical music with newer approaches. The concert will close with selections from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. As to which of Holst’s planets will be featured in the program, well, you’ll need to come to the symphony to find out.

The 2019-20 season for the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra opens Saturday, Nov 9th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at https://www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org/ There is an opportunity to meet Mario Alejandro Torres if you attend the pre-concert chat on Sunday, Nov 10th at 2:15 p.m.

Listen here as CCAC members Michael Cox and Nora Nickum explain the charge given to the city’s Climate Change Advisory Committee, what challenges our island community faces in the event of accelerating climate change, and how you can help our community prepare for what’s ahead.

The first workshop will be held in City Hall Saturday December 7 from 10am to noon.  The second workshop will be held in the BHS library on December 11 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

CCAC member Nora Nickum has worked on climate resilience at the US Agency for International Development, and then on climate action planning for communities around the state and around the country. In this podcast she shares some of her experiences from working on these problems in other communities.

Michael Cox is a former EPA climate advisor and whistle-blower who has his own observations to share about the work that lies ahead. Together Mike and Nora invite us to participate in the CCAC’s decision process by participating in the workshops and taking the online survey.
